News – May 2005

Dear Friends and Supporters,

May has been a relatively peaceful month compared to April. Generally, the babies have been well and, with the weather warming up a little, they have been able to get out for walks in the village and play in the playground.

Foster Home Shun Yi, Beijing

The babies

We have a new child, 2-year-old Tong Qun Qun from Anhui Province who requires much love, proper feeding and cleft palate surgery. Apparently she has only had milk for the past 2 years. She is now on solids and doing very well. She is due for surgery in September by visiting US plastic surgeons so we hope that she will be quite healthy by then.

Alicia Dang Ji Bei and Saragrace Dang Jian Chao have both returned from Singapore having had heart surgery. They are both waiting for their respective adoptive parents to come for them.

Eric Wu Min with imperforate anus has been reunited with his biological family.Children’s Hope International and China Social Welfare Association have been instrumental in finding his family and facilitating this.

Dang Guo Kun, with a cleft lip, has had his surgery and he looks wonderful. Cost of his surgery was covered by Love Without Boundaries.

Michelle Fu Ya Quan, with a complex heart condition, has been adopted by a Swedish family. This was a very special joy to us here at New Hope Foundation as she was very close to death at one point and her life was saved by the grace of God. At one stage it seemed an absolutely impossible task but He sent us the key people to accomplish this.

Ariel and Sarah Fu Wen Jia have been brought back to Beijing from their orphanage, who recalled them for surgery a few months ago. We are at full capacity again.

Dang Shan Qiang is due for heart surgery in Singapore in the next few weeks as his case is reasonably urgent and Grace Marie will also go there to repair her anal-vagina defect which will be a fairly delicate operation.

Volunteers

International School of BeijingInteract / Roots & Shoots came and planted a beautiful flower garden outside our dining room and it looks wonderful. Thanks so much.

Shun Yi Outreach Foster Program

Love Without Boundaries, who sponsors this program, visited us this month and we paid a special visit to all the children in the program. The families were given financial gifts to show appreciation for the wonderful care they have given the kids. We have one new family and Sarah Fu Wen Jia will be placed with them.

Dana Dang Jiang has left us to be adopted and we will replace her with another child. The search for more local families to expand this program continues. We have surveyed a few but they have not quite been up to our standards. We currently have 8 families with a total of 11 children between them.

Foster Home Sai Qi, Fujian Province

The 4 walkers donated by Harvard China Care students, have been given to the children at this home. Rob’s recent visit to Sai Qi regarding the possibility of re-building their home was not a positive experience. There were some doubts as to whether the funds were going to be spent wisely by Ms Xu’s “advisors”, so the current option is to offer to renovate the exisisting building for the moment till a better option to re-build, comes along. We will still continue to support the running costs of the home by sending them their child-sponsorship funds and we are still helping facilitate surgeries for the kids who need it. 2 children require eye surgery and one needs a cleft lip/palate repair.Love Without Boundaries will be funding these surgeries.

NHF Special Care Unit, Henan Province

This Unit has been really busy this month.

Lizzie Fu Wen Ping, with severe hydrocephalus and who had been with us since we first opened the unit, sadly passed away.

Jake Fu Chun Chao, with severe neurological defects as well as other problems seems unlikely to be well enough to survive till the UCLA surgeon arrives but we are still hoping for the best.

The other 3 babies, Gill Fu Dong Yu, Fu Xiao Tian and Daisy Fu Chun Yi seem to be doing well and are still scheduled for surgery as soon as the surgeon arrive in the next 2 weeks or so.

We had premature triplets sent to us: 2 girls Rea Fu Dong Yi, Rosie Fu Dong Er and a boy, Robin Fu Dong San. The girls are feeding well and should be able to go home very soon. The little boy is improving.Beijing United Family Hospital has been instrumental in helping to save these babies lives. The babies’ family members are doing rotations at the Unit feeding and bonding with them.

Volunteers to the unit this month have been Nurse Lyn G, (UK) Dr Erica G (Ireland) and Becca R (USA). We have appreciated their help very much.

Our Thanks

  1. Thank you to all those travellers from overseas who have brought in valuable medical supplies.

  2. We thank Healing the Children who funded the 2 nebulizers we needed. With permission, other donations towards this need have been used to buy solutions to use in the nebulizers. Many more nebulizers are on the way to us and we will be able to donate the surplus to other foster homes like us in the area who care for orphans.

  3. Thank you Teresa, Tom and Iris who brought in colostomy bags from Hong Kong, and Michael and Joan V for bringing them from the US. We also received many more from various donors, many of whom we don’t even know. Thank you all SO much for responding so generously to this need.

Our Needs

  1. Our current need is to convert a roof-top area in the Special Care Unit (which is on the 6th floor of the orphanage) to a roof garden so that the children can be taken outside for a bit of fresh air. We have had a quote to do this and it is estimated that it will cost about US$2500 to make it safe and put down rubber flooring. The children now spend 24 hours a day in-doors because there is no where else to go. Even though they are chronically ill and many may not survive for very long, we feel that they should not be deprived of sunshine and fresh air. A plan of the proposed site is on our website or you may email us if you would like to see pictures.

  2. The Special Care Unit is in urgent need of medically trained volunteers from December 2005 onwards. I know this is a tall order as this is the festive season but if I don’t ask, I will not receive.

  3. As we are now receiving many more newborn premature babies, we are in need of preemie diapers and clothes which are not easy to get in China. Pre-loved preemie clothes are perfectly fine.

  4. We are in need of some funds to pay for the neurosurgeries of our 4 little ones. We need approximately another $10,000 to cover all the costs. The surgeon from UCLA is donating his time and skill and he will be operating for 4 straight days on a total of 8 children.

We are very grateful to Beijing United Family Hospital and Shanghai United Family Hospital who have given is this wonderful opportunity to have an excellent surgeon come and help our kids.

Again, we are very grateful for all your support that makes it possible to truly change the lives for these children.

With gratitude,

Robin and Joyce Hill.
