News – February 2006
Dear Friends and Supporters, Many opportunities are often presented to us for expansion of the work of New Hope Foundation (NHF). We approach all of these with great caution and Godly advice from our board members. This year, God willing, NHF will open the Love Without Boundaries Special Care Unit in Beijing as well as the NHF Special Care Unit in Luoyang. We will soon be running a total of 5 projects.
Foster Home Shun Yi, Beijing (26 beds)The babiesSadly we lost Fu Jin Wei on Feb 5. He had Down’s syndrome, a congenital heart condition, was malnourished and died of a viral pneumonia. He was in no discomfort at the end and went peacefully. Lily Fu Wen Hua’s burns continue to heal. It has been a team effort to care for Lily and we are very grateful for our volunteers, especially Sallie S. who chose to stay on longer to help care for her. See also our “Thanks” section (see below) regarding special prayers for Lily. After a month with us, the worst is over and she will return to the Special Care Unit in Jiaozuo, Henan Province, this week for our volunteer nurses there to continue her care .
Fu Jin Jin was leaking brain fluid around her shunt and had to be admitted to a local hospital for surgery to replace the shunt. Fu Yan will be returned to the orphanage as he is brain damaged but feeding well and does not need any surgical intervention. This will make room for another “waiting baby” who desperately needs surgery. We were most excited to see Shan Tao (Evan) again. He was adopted by a Dutch family in August 2004 and his parents brought him back to China this month to visit us.
Love Without Boundaries Shun Yi Outreach Foster Program (currently 13 children with possible maximum of 20)
We have had to bring Bobby back from foster care as his mom could no longer care for him. He will remain with us till adoption. We would like to eventually be able to put 7 more children out in this program to ease our bed situation. We will see what happens.
NHF Special Care Unit, Jiaozuo, Henan Province (12 beds)Our beds here are full and we had to turn away 2 babies, but we have put them on our waiting list and will find beds as soon as we can. VolunteersSharon C. and her Mom Janet were with us again and worked in this unit, giving Marta and Susanna a break for a couple of weeks. Nurse Kate RT arrived from Australia and will assist us for about a month.
LWB Special Care Unit (12 beds)The bathroom fittings and other permanent fixtures have been ordered, and the flooring will go down. Bedding and cribs are ready and some new staff have been interviewed and selected, ready to be trained and start work. We have 17 babies on our waiting list but we will be able to take the 12 most urgent cases first and deal with the rest the best we can. Our appeal for a physiotherapist to help us set up a program for this unit met with 12 enthusiastic applicants from 6 different countries. We have narrowed it down to 2 people whom we feel with be the best ones to start the program and are inviting the others to come when they can, throughout the year to ensure its continued success. In total we have 20 children who are currently in need of Physiotherapy.
NHF Special Care Unit, Luoyang, Henan Province: (45 beds)We have a contractor to survey the unit and plan the renovations. The renovations will probably be started towards the middle of the year as right now we will not be able to single-handedly, cope with the daily medical needs of a total of 96 children without more help from long-term medical volunteers. This unit will be able to take in 45 critically ill infants from the Luoyang Orphanage who are in need of care. We hope to save many more lives. Our vision is still “To comfort always, to relieve often and to save sometimes”. Our Most Sincere Thanks To
Our Needs
With gratitude, Joyce and Robin Hill
