News – November 2006
Dear Friends and Supporters, November has been a very busy month for us. Our Medical assistant Lynsay and her family have been way for several weeks, Lyn and her husband Al have arrived to manage our units in Henan and babies have been moved in and out for various reasons. In total, for the month of November we have had 22 new admissions, in all our units and no deaths. Today we care for a total of 102 babies. We officially opened our new Palliative Care unit in Luoyang on November 25 and this was attended by various local officials, orphanage directors as well as specially invited guests, Andy Tung and his wife Dr Rulin Fuong.
Foster Home Shun Yi, Beijing (38 beds)The babiesA few cases of chicken pox are still cropping up despite the children having had immunizations, but we will ride it through. The 5 children who went to Hefei for cleft lip and palate surgery have all retuned well and are looking beautiful. Aurora is home from Singapore after her second heart surgery which was difficult and fraught with complications. She is now extremely well and filled with extra energy. New baby Fu Jiang Fei was admitted for surgery for her meningomyelocele and surgery was done within a few days of admission. Jayne and Hugo went to Hangzhou for surgery and a cardiac assessment respectively. Noble Fu You Peng had surgery in Beijing for his cleft lip and palate.
We have had to make the difficult decision to put Samara Fu Jin Jin in Palliative Care now as her brain infection has recurred and she has already had several surgeries and hospital admissions this year. We have conferred with her neurosurgeons and they both agree that this is the kindest option. She will be cared for in our unit in Jiaozuo. Joey Dang Jian Yu who has a malignant, untreatable brain tumor, has been moved to our Palliative Care unit in Luoyang. He is comfortable and pain free. The decisions that we have to make for children like Samara and Joey are most difficult. They are made with many specialist consultations and Christian advisors who believe in the sanctity of life and have complete trust in God who is the ultimate giver of life. VolunteersSally E and Kelsey D served in Beijing.
Love Without Boundaries Shun Yi Outreach Foster Program (currently 16 children with possible maximum of 20)Elly, after her cleft palate surgery, has been moved to the Outreach program and so has Ellen Fu Zi Xiu who had spinal defect which as been surgically corrected. Sarah Fu Wen Jia was returned to her orphanage at their request in preparation for her adoption.
NHF Special Care Unit, Jiaozuo, Henan Province (12 beds)One new baby, Fu Qiu Yu, was admitted this month besides the transfer of Samara Fu Jin Jin. Since this opened on 1 January 2005, 84 babies have been admitted and 35 have died. VolunteersLee N, and Gemma R, both nurses from the UK, served in the Henan units.
Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (9 beds)This unit admitted 5 new babies – Xi Meng Li, Huai Chun Song and Huai Chun Xiang from Anhui Province, Jiang Yu Ying from Zhejiang Province, and Rao Lan Jiao from Jiangxi Province, all with varying medical problems. Dang Jin Yang is seriously ill again, this time with an infection in her heart and was admitted to Beijing United Hospital. Her treatment continues at home and she is improving. There are a total of 7 babies in this unit.
NHF Special Care Unit, Luoyang, Henan Province (45 beds)16 new babies and Joey were admitted this month so Lyn and Al have hit the ground running. The total here at the time of writing is 29 babies. We want to share with you some “before and after” pictures. All that we did was to feed and love these kids. Their eyes speak volumes:
