News – February 2007

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Happy Chinese New Year to all who celebrate this festive time. We gave the usually gifts of rice, oil and fish to all our local employees to wish them health, abundant provisions, and prosperity for the coming year. The children and staff in Beijing were also entertained with a firework display on Chinese New Year eve.

The preschool kids with the help of their teachers and volunteers performed a lion dance much to the amusement of rest of the children and staff.

We have made a minor change to our name to be “politically correct”. The Beijing Unit will now be referred to as Hope Healing Home. Our logo will bear the title of our existing Foundation, the New Hope Foundation and the Special Care Units in Henan will retain their titles.

It has been a difficult month for our team having lost several precious babies. Even though the deaths were expected and knowing that they died loved and pain-free, it still does not make it easy for those who love these kids.

We have had some problems with our server which has now been fixed so if anyone has not received replies to their emails during February, please contact us.

The babies

Fu Jiang Fei is improving very slowly and has been moved to our Special Care Unit in Jiaozuo where she will receive loving care and physiotherapy.

Josiah is deteriorating and has been moved to a Palliative Care Unit close by where he is receiving excellent care.

One baby (awaiting sponsorship), 3 months old with a spinal defect, was admitted this month. He is having a few problems gaining weight but I am sure we will be able to help him.

Love Without Boundaries Shun Yi Outreach Foster Program

One family has decided that they no longer want to be part of this program and are returning their two children, Andrea Ellen and Olivia.

Andrea has been moved back to our Home as it will be easier for her to attend pre-school and Olivia will be cared for by a family who has had one of their children recently adopted.

NHF Special Care Unit, Jiaozuo, Henan Province (12 beds)

This month one baby died (Jenny Fu Jiang Ning) and one returned to orphanage (Catherine Mary Fu Chang Xian).

Two new babies were admitted: Adrian Fu Ai Jun who is premature; and Fu Jiang Fei who had neurosurgery and recurrent shunt infections. For those who know Samara Fu Jin Jin, she is very poorly now, still having some small drinks and mostly just sleeping quietly. Her nannies are very gentle with her and are really upset because they love her very much.

To all those who were so involved with the care and support of Joey Dang Jian Yu, it saddens me to tell you that he passed away at 2:30am on Sunday 18 February. He had an untreatable brain tumor that spread rapidly. He died peacefully and was loved to the end. He had to bear so much in his short life here on earth but we know that he deeply touched the lives of so many people.

Three other precious ones also died this month: Lesley Dang Le Xi, who was with us only for a few hours; Peter Dang Le Jian; and Toby Dang Le Zheng.

Eight new babies were admitted with varying medical conditions.

Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit

We admitted two new children his month.

Yu Xiao Qian, aged 7 months with a complex congenital heart condition, was seriously ill and did not make it. She died peacefully on Sunday 18 February at 12:20pm. She as loved till the very end.

Dang Xin Nan, aged 2 years, also has a complex heart condition that has been deemed inoperable. We will try every possible avenue to find him the best care possible.

Our Most Sincere Thanks To

  1. Much needed important medicines continue to arrive from all over. Thank you SO much, everyone.

  2. Thanks to our faithful supporters, old and new. Your gifts help us greatly to carry on serving these children in the best ways we can.

Our Needs

  1. We are in need of space chambers for our young children with respiratory problems to use with inhalers. These are not easy to get in Beijing.

  2. A new suction unit would be very helpful in our home in Beijing as we need to suction children who are unable to clear their lungs on their own. A suction unit can be bought locally in Beijing at the cost of about 1,500 Rmb (about US $200).

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
