News – March 2007
Dear Friends and Supporters,
There has been a lot of movement of children this month for various reasons, and several are being prepared for surgery. This newsletter will be mainly about them as they dominate our lives, thoughts and prayers more than ever. There has been joy and grief and every emotion in between for all those who care for them.

The babies
Toby and Howie had to be returned to their orphanage in Lang Fang due to some internal problems in that province. There is a possibility that they will come back to us and we hope that this will happen very soon. They are both waiting adoption.
Samuel was moved to a local foster family near his orphanage in Kaifeng so that his dossier can be prepared for adoption.

Three new babies have been admitted: Huai Jiao (Henan Province) with a cleft lip and palate; Fu Xi (Henan Province) with a colostomy and no medical history so we have to investigate further; and Fu Kang (Shandong Province) with a congenital heart disease.

Josiah passed away peacefully just after midnight on March 29. He had multiple neurosurgeries but we are unable to save him. We thank Shannon W and her team for loving and caring for him at the end of his life.
Pip, who has retinoblastoma (malignant tumors in both eyes), has been moved into Shannon’s care.
Sting has had surgery in a local hospital to close his colostomy but has had many postoperative complications. He has been in hospital for a month now and is still not well. Please lift him up in prayer.

Love Without Boundaries Shun Yi Outreach Foster Program
Two new families have joined this program and Charmion has been placed with one. The other family is waiting for their medical clearance before we place a child with them.
Josie has been adopted and her new parents report that she has settled into her new family and is very happy.
Alex has been moved to a local family and is doing very well.

Show Hope Special Care Center – Jiaozuo (12 beds)
Samara Fu Jin Jin died on March 8. She was peaceful at the end. She came to us as a newborn about 19 months ago. She had multiple neurosugeries while with us but we were still unable to save her.
Thanks very much to the sterling efforts of our volunteers there for various periods this month, a particularly difficult and busy time: Kerry; Jackie; Hannah; Jane; Viv; and Amanda.
NHF Special Care Unit, Luoyang, Henan Province
Although many children have died here this month each one of these very special children have been loved and cared for by both nannies and volunteers. We are grateful for their lives and the privilege of caring for them.
The children have benefited from the care and play of our volunteers: Kerry; Jackie; Amanda; Katy; Viv; Huw; and Marg.
Please remember Amanda as she settles in for a year volunteering with us.

Thanks to all who have donated medicines, equipment and toys (and worked so hard to help get them here) – we are very grateful. It is good to see the children well dressed, happy and receiving appropriate medication.

Most of the kids here are doing well – even Chun Cong and Xin Jia, who have been our biggest concerns, seem to be stable for now though they are on continuous oxygen.

- We received several spacers that were requested last month. Thank you all very much.
- We also received funds to buy 2 suction units. Thank you so much Danny S and Betty C. One will be used here in Beijing and the other will be sent to our unit in Luoyang.
- We thank Special Kids from Murfreesborough, TN for covering the cost of Sting’s recent surgery.
- We thank Ariel W who is volunteering with us and is willing to care for two children in Hong Kong while they undergo surgery. Ariel has been a wonderful help with the preschool, and doing anything else that has been asked of her. She has a true servant’s heart.
Our Needs
Medical fund: I am not sure where to start. So many children are going in so many directions for surgery over these next few weeks. The funds we need for each child are estimates only. If anyone would like to sponsor any of these children’s surgeries, please let us know.
- We are preparing 3 children (Patrick, Wendy and Taylor) to receive neurosurgery in Shanghai Children’s Medical Center with our regular visiting neurosurgeon from UCLA, Dr Jorge Lazareff and his team at the end of April. It will cost about US$2,000-US$3,000 per child, for hospital fees, transport, baby supplies and nanny stipend. The visiting team does not charge for their services.

- Two children – Jayne and Benjamin – are going to Hong Kong’sMatilda International Hospitalfor urological surgery. We only need the cost of the airfare and minor expenses for the children and their escorts which are about US$1,500 each. Matilda hospital and the surgeons do not charge us for these surgeries.

- Fu Xi will be admitted to a local hospital here to have further investigations and surgery to close his colostomy. This is estimated to cost about $3000. We thankBeijing United Family Hospitalfor doing his initial assessments and for organizing his surgery.
- Please pray for all the above children as well as Sarah who requires a liver transplant and will be going to the US as soon a possible. Please pray, too, for Qing Nan who will be going to Singapore for heart surgery.
