News – May 2007
Dear Friends and Supporters, Volunteers Bill and Lynsay Lewis have left to go back to the US. We are grateful for their time here for the past 12 months and wish them all the best for their future. Lyn and Alan Gould, based in Henan, are back in the UK for a long overdue vacation. Volunteers are in place in Henan to cover them. Thanks to Toby and Melissa, we have been able to employ 4 Filipino nurses. One was found not to be suitable but the other 3 will undergo training to assess their suitability to work long term with us. We hope to employ 6 medical personnel by the end of this year which will enable us to be well staffed in all our current units and open more facilities in the near future.
Hope Healing Home Shun Yi, BeijingThe babies2 month old He Yu Jia was left at our gate one night in a very poor state. She has Hirschsprung’s disease, a congenital defect of the large bowel and has not been able to feed well. Whoever left her at our gate obviously cared very much about her as she was left with several blankets, clean clothes, formula and a bottle. Maybe abandoning her at our gate was a last desperate effort by her family to save her life. The local authorities have allowed us to keep her to see if we can help her. She is currently inBeijing United Family Hospitaland they are trying their very best to save her. Her date of birth was written on a small piece of red paper found in her blankets but she had no name. Our staff has named her “beautiful rain” and she bears our family’s last name. The meaning of “rain” in the Chinese culture is one that holds much hope of life and survival. This is our hope for her. Please pray for her. She has a long hard road to travel but our hopes are high. Timmy had heart surgery in Singapore and is now home with us. He will need more surgery later but for now he is much better. Jayne has had the last of 3 surgeries in Hong Kong and we expect her home very soon. Another new baby, Xi Jia Wei, was admitted. He has a congenital heart condition but apparently suffered a stroke while surgery was being attempted so only a minor procedure was able to be done till he is stronger. He is doing reasonably well and we have high hopes that he will continue to improve. Nicholas has had his heart investigated and his defect has been found to be very severe and inoperable. He also has other medical issues which make his prognosis very poor. He will not be returned to his orphanage but will now receive only palliative care. Rebekah (in-house) and Ariel (Outreach program) have been adopted. We will miss them very much. There have been so many people who have played a part in saving and changing their lives. We are very grateful to all of them. We send our beautiful little girls to their new parents with all our love, hope and prayers for a better life.
Love Without Boundaries Shun Yi Outreach Foster ProgramCal was brought back into our home because the foster parents refused to use his braces at night to keep his corrected clubbed feet in position. We now have to start the treatment all over again. The foster parents of Alex and Kailee have asked to return the children because of family matters. We will try to find other homes for them in the Foster program.
Show Hope Special Care Center – Jiaozuo (12 beds)The beds here are all full. There have been no recent deaths but some children have been returned to the orphanage to make room for more needy children.
NHF Special Care Unit, Luoyang, Henan Province (45 beds)6 new babies were admitted this month and 5 have died. They all died loved, clean, fed and pain-free.
Heartbridge Rehabilitation UnitThe beds are full and the children in this unit are all doing quite well. There have been no new admissions or major problems this month.
Our Most Sincere Thanks To
Our Needs
Any contributions towards either of these needs will be very gratefully received.
With our deepest gratitude, Joyce and Robin Hill
