News – September 2007
Dear Friends and Supporters, This month Lyn Gould RN, Dr Yang from Luoyang orphanage, and I attended a worldwide Palliative Care conference in Singapore. Lyn and I learned a lot and were very encouraged to know that the level of care that we provide our children who have life-limiting conditions, is of a high standard, compared to many developed countries. Dr Yang was very pleased learn of the value that professionals in other nations, place on the lives and deaths of these precious children. Dr Harold and Mrs Cross, Mariah (RN) and Melissa Bywater from Community Bible Church in Beaufort, South Carolina covered all our units while we were away and we are very grateful and all those who supported us financially to attend this conference.
New Projects1) Xin YangThe refurbishment of this, 18 bed Special Care Unit in Xinyang CWI is progressing well and should be finished by the first week of October. Please pray for the team, who will be in Xinyang from the time the builders finish, to buy equipment, hire and train staff and set up the support systems – all before October 20th when we have planned to take the first children. 2) LuoyangA well is being dug and building plans are still be fine-tuned for this large project and as soon as the builders are ready to start, we will be prepared. 3) Expansion of the Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Unit in BeijingThis will bring the total number of children we care for in Beijing to 78.

With sadness we report that Pip, aged 1 year, who suffered from retinoblastoma, cancerous growths in both eyes, died peacefully. His long term prognosis was so poor and we are immensely thankful that he did not reach a stage where aggressive treatment would have caused him more suffering that he needed to bear. We had to move Samuel to take Pip’s place in Hospice care. Samuel has a very complex heart condition and is also brain damaged. Deciding on hospice care for some of these children is always a very difficult decision to make but we do so after extensive investigations, discussion and prayer. Yet again we are indebted to Shannon W and her staff for being there and loving our children till the end. All is well with the other 21 children and their families.
NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo and Luoyong, Henan Province (57 beds)JiaozuoSince its inception on January 1st 2005, we have cared for 112 infants. The survival rate in this unit is about 40%. This month Maggie and David passed away peacefully. Our staff in Jiaozuo were honored to have cared for them in their last days and hours. LuoyangSeptember 14th was the first anniversary of this unit. We have cared for a total of 105 children since then. The survival rate here is about 50%. This month Mary, Natalie, Tom, Ben, Jordan, Jayden, and Rose passed away peacefully. Natalie, a little premature baby, was held by her nanny who sang her a Chinese love song as she took her last breaths. To see our Father’s compassion growing in the hearts of these ladies is awesome. We are all particularly devastated by the death of 3-year-old Rose. She had a complex heart condition and just 2 days before she was finally accepted and ready to leave for surgery, she was unable to hold on any longer.
John is our pilot in a trial for our more able long-term children to receive physiotherapy from the team in the rehab centre at the orphanage. This 7-year-old was a very sick and very disabled boy when he first came to the SCU last September, he is now a lively and relatively healthy boy with a very active mind, lots of determination and a very infectious laugh! We have been fortunate to be able to hire 3 good Filipina nurses who are in Luoyang being trained for the work in our three Special Care Units Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (9, soon to be 18 beds)With minimal renovations we have decided to expand the Heartbridge unit to receive another 9 children.Love Without Boundaries facilitates many heart surgeries a year in China. Many of the children are in need of extra care if they are to survive. We are pleased to offer this opportunity to Love Without Boundaries to help care for their most vulnerable children. 4 new children were admitted this month:
