News – November 2007
Dear Friends and Supporters, Work has started on the foundations of the new Shaohannah’s Hope Home in Luoyang and so far, things are going smoothly. Building sites don’t make pretty pictures but these are the foundations on which many orphan’s lives will be saved and their futures changed for the better:
Hope Healing Home BeijingOur babies who went for plastic surgery in Shanghai have all returned. We have had a few complications with a couple of them but the rest are doing very well. See below a couple of before and after pictures. We are very grateful to Love Without Boundaries and their team and we look forward to their next surgical mission trip. Gabriel, who is still in Hong Kong, has had his hip surgery and all is well. The surgeon will also operate on his wrists which are badly crippled by his condition (arthrogryposis). He is being cared for by Sylvia H, a volunteer from the UK who has done this for us several times before. Will, who had a serious infection of his bowel and was also born with no anus, is now home with us after 2 surgeries. His anus has been reconstructed and in about 6 months from now he will have a third operation to close his colostomy. X Wei’s treatment for his club foot has been completed and he has been returned to his foster home in Gong Yi, Henan Province.
AdoptionsGrace Marie left us on 11th November to be with her new family from Sweden. She had been with us for 3 years and will be sadly missed. She bonded very quickly to her new family who has another daughter about 8 years old. Howie has also been picked up by his American parents this month. This is an awesome outcome for Howie who was born with Down’s syndrome, imperforate anus and a club foot. We have no words to describe our joy for this sweet little boy and our deepest admiration for the young couple who have chosen him, their first child, above all others. Many people in many parts of the world will be rejoicing.
New babiesDH Ming, from our palliative care unit in Luoyang, will stay with us in Beijing as there is a very good chance that she will be able to go to the US for treatment very soon, thanks to the efforts of former volunteers Mariah and Melissa B from South Carolina. ZQ Qiao, from Henan Province, requires surgery for the cancerous growth in her left eye. Z Wei, also from Henan Province, needs neurosurgery for a birth defect of her lower spine. Her prognosis looks very good. FT Zhou, also from Henan Province, has also been admitted with weakness of his left arm and leg.
Love Without Boundaries Shun Yi Outreach Foster ProgramThe kids in the Outreach program are doing well. YX Jia and HC Xiao may have to be moved into this Outreach program. We are hoping that Jia may have an opportunity in the US for heart surgery and we are working on it. Sadly, there are no options open at the moment for Xiao. The number of children in this outreach program has now risen to 24.
NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo and Luoyong, Henan Province (75 beds)JiaozuoWe said a fond farewell to Douglas and Fred. They were loved to the end. LuoyangThis month Grace, LynLee, Cathy, Helen, Jemima, Denzel and Suzy passed away peacefully. Stephen left Luoyang on 19th November for Hangzhou for heart surgery. Please keep him in your prayers. If all goes well for him, he will be yet another child whose life will be saved after being sent to our unit initially with little hope.
Xin YangThis new unit is running well manned by 2 Filipina nurses and a full complement of nannies to care for 18 babies. Cathy and Chona passed away peacefully.
Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)Miao is in Hong Kong being assessed for her inability to feed resulting in severe malnutrition. So far we have had no clear answers from the investigations we have done here and we hope that the team in Hong Kong will be able to help. Yi, who had had heart surgery followed by a serious infection, seems to be doing well despite the odds. Thanks to those who prayed for her and to the doctors in Hangzhou who did not give up on her. Niu went to Hangzhou for heart surgery and this was successful. There were three new admissions: Quan and Zhuang from Guangdong Province; and Wen from Jiangxi Province.
Our Most Sincere Thanks To
Our NeedsIt is the nature of our work that 99.9% of our kids in Beijing require surgical or medical intervention of some kind, many of them life-saving procedures. When treatment has to be done in China, it is not free. Without these hospital admissions, they would not be alive. This year to date we have spent about US $130,000 on hospital bills. Here is a list of some of the children who need funds for their surgery or medical treatment. Please help if you are able to. Donations for these kids, no matter how small, will go towards saving a child’s life.
With our deepest gratitude, Joyce and Robin Hill
