News – December 2007

Dear Friends and Supporters,

A Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year to you all. Our prayers are for love and peace in your lives at this blessed time and for the coming year.

Personally, for our family, we had a very special time in Dundee, Scotland where our daughter, Amber, and her fiancée, Marcio Jesus Batista, were married on Dec 22nd. Members of our very large family, all Amber’s surviving brothers and sisters and many close friends met together and the wedding was wonderful. Thank you to all who sent best wishes and gifts to the bride and groom. We welcome, with great pleasure, Marcio’s family from Brazil as a part of our loving, extended family. We are grateful for a wonderful son-in-law.

New Hope Foundation has recently helped to set up an isolation and a palliative care unit in Haikou Orphanage, Hainan Island at the request of an adoptive parent who wants to help this orphanage, as well as at the request of the orphanage itself. NHF will not be running these units as it would be logistically difficult for us but we have offered to train their nurses and doctors in our palliative care unit in Luoyang. The use of the finances to run this unit will be monitored by our Project manager who will report directly to the donor on a monthly basis.

In the words of Kahlil Gibran, “joy and sorrow are inseparable… together they come and when one sits alone with you . . . remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.”

We are deeply grieved and stunned by the sudden loss of Will who was born with Down’s syndrome and imperforate anus. He had been admitted to hospital several times in his short life and the last time he was admitted for a severe chest infection. A few days after discharge, he died suddenly on Dec 19th.

Gabriel is still in Hong Kong having surgery on his wrists after his surgery on his left hip.

ZQ Qiao went to Hong Kong on Dec 12th for surgery and chemotherapy. Her left eye was completely filled with cancer and it was successfully removed. There are 2 small growths in her right eye and she will undergo chemotherapy to try to save her life and the sight of this eye.

Adoptions

This month we witnessed 2 very special miracles of survival and adoption.

Sarah, who was born without a bile system in her liver, has survived so many obstacles and is now the beloved daughter and only child of Mike and Kim Barrett from the US. Please keep them in your prayers as they will, in the near future, see Sarah undergo a life-saving liver transplant.

Timothy has been through an extremely difficult time with heart surgery followed by serious complications, only to emerge from these trials as a wonderful, sweet, healthy little boy. He has been adopted to France.

Timothy (above) was adopted and his place was taken by Jacob.

Sadly, we lost HC Xiao whose heart condition was deemed inoperable. He was dearly loved to the end.

NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo and Luoyong, Henan Province (75 beds)

Jiaozuo

There were no deaths in this unit this month.

Luoyang

This month we lost Hugo and Taylor on Dec 10th.

Xin Yang

Chris died peacefully on Dec 19th, loved and comforted.

This unit will now be called the “Alexandria Yeo and Open Arms Children Foundation Caring Unit” in recognition of their very generous offer to financially support the running of this unit for the next 5 years. We are very grateful for this support and we hope that many more children’s lives will be saved.

DM Miao has returned after a month in Hong Kong where she was investigated fully for her issues with cyclical vomiting. Though it may take a long time to overcome her problems, we hope that with the opening into her stomach we will be able to feed her and bring her weight up steadily.

We are devastated by the death on Dec 12th of LC Yi who died suddenly after a long struggle with complications after heart surgery.

HN Niu is still in hospital also suffering complications from heart surgery.

There were 3 new admissions this month: YF Zhuang; JH Zhou; and JY Na.
