News – March 2008

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We want to personally thank all those who responded so quickly to our personal need in last month’s newsletter. Within hours of our request the bill was paid in full by a couple from Hong Kong. We have replied to all the other donors telling them of this. I am feeling much better these last few days and have been able to work well.

Hope Healing Home, Beijing

Lucy and Emma are still overseas having the treatment they need.

Jenna has returned after successful heart surgery in Hangzhou and she is doing well. She is on some medication and will be reviewed by a cardiologist in 3 months.

Timmy has returned to Singapore for his second heart surgery. He was accompanied by volunteer Mrs. Sue Sharp from England who took him to Singapore for his first surgery. From a quiet, anxious little boy who could not walk when he first came to us ,he has since developed into a very outgoing, cheerful little guy. We pray that his surgery will go well.

Matthew (II) had surgery on his bowel to revise his colostomy. The surgery was done inBeijing United Family Hospitalby Dr Peter Yip form Hong Kong who came specifically to do this. We are grateful to BJ UFH for allowing Dr Yip to come.

Adoptions

This month we saw 4 of our children leave us for adoption: LG Yan, Lu Lu and Leiah to the US; Matthew (I) to Sweden.

It is such a joy to witness this final transition. The children are healed, healthy and happy and we are grateful to the families who have chosen to give the children loving homes. They will be missed especially by their foster parents and nannies who have lovingly cared for them.

Shaohannah’s Hope Healing Home

Work has recommenced after the New Year break. The roof is on and work has begun on the inside. This Home, funded by Shaohannah’s Hope, a charity of Steven Curtis Chapman, will house about 125 children with varying medical needs from those needing end-of-life care, longer term care, to those needing surgery rendering them adoptable.

NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)

Jiaozuo

We lost premature baby Angela who weighed just over 1 kg. She was very ill and survived only a few weeks.

Jeff (I), only 4 days old was admitted. He has a severe heart condition but we may be able to save him. Weighing over 2 kgs, he is maintaining his body temperature and is feeding well so far. If he continues to do well we will have him transferred to Beijing to see if his heart condition is operable.

New baby Hua (brain damaged)was admitted this month. She is quite ill and her limbs are swollen.

Luoyang

It was a bonus and a blessing to be able to bring DY Po to Beijing for surgery. His prognosis is very good and if all goes well with his surgery, he will certainly be very adoptable.

Harvey, Anne, Jack, Sherwin, Jim, Jeff (II), Denver and Kevin were admitted, all with various forms of birth defects.

Samuel was admitted aged 26 days with a severe heart condition and only survived 2 weeks.

Charlene (undeveloped brain) only survived a few hours and Anne (cerebral palsy) died suddenly of pneumonia.

Xin Yang

We loved and lost Joshua after being with us for only 5 days. He suffered from a very severe heart condition.

Grace a very small premature baby weighing just over 1 kg was admitted and is doing very well so far. We hope that she will continue to improve under the excellent care of our nurses.

Our nurses in these units have a very difficult job and deserve encouragement and praise. Please lift them up in prayer.

Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)

Most of the kids here are doing well.

SA Zhuang and JY Na will be prepared for cleft lip surgery soon.

JH Zhou is not doing as well as we expected. We will continue to observe and treat him and hope for the best.

Our Most Sincere Thanks To

  1. The German Women’s Christmas bazaar for giving us and extra financial gift which we were not expecting.

  2. All those who sent clothes that we were in need of last month.

  3. Trina W for sending us much needed medications.

  4. To the students of 2 international schools, ISB and IAB, who came and planted flowers in our front garden.

Our Needs

  1. We are in need regularly of special formulae for special children who have unusual medical conditions or those who need extra nutrition before of after surgery as well as our very premature babies whose body systems are not mature enough to absorb ordinary formulae. These are not easy to get in China so we depend on donations from overseas. If any one would like to donate a few cans at a time for these vulnerable children it would make such a huge difference to their development.

Donors in the US can send their donations to Rebecca Dorris in Tennessee (rsdorris@placetobe.org) and she will ensure that they are sent to us safely. Donors from other countries can contact us directly (joyce@hopefosterhome.com) to figure out the best way to get these to us. Every single can counts. If at all possible, the powdered forms of these formulae are much easier to transport and will last us much longer.

    The formulae we need are:
    Peptamen Junior®
    Similac NeoSure®
    Nutren Junior®

  2. We would like to replace some of our playground equipment for the children as the weather warms up. After 5 years some of it has broken and is unsafe for the children. The estimated cost will be about US $8000. We would appreciate any contributions towards this.

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
