News – May 2008

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This month has been full of tragedy. Most of you may have already heard that our dear friends Steven Curtis and Marybeth Chapman lost their youngest daughter, 5-year-old Maria Sue to a tragic accident. Condolences and prayers have poured out to them from all over the world. Please keep them in your payers at this terrible time. They have been advocates for orphans for many years and Steven has used his gift of music to bring awareness and support to many children and adoptive parents. They have been wonderful supporters of our work for which we are very grateful. This tragedy seems senseless but as people of faith we all know that it will work for good.

The earthquake in Sichuan province is no less tragic with the loss of so many innocent lives. Our staff, in our own small way, has raised about $3000 towards the needs there. The money will be channeled to the victims via the Red Cross.

Hope Healing Home, Beijing

In light of such tragedy it seems trivial to discuss our work but carry on we must, for the sakes of the little ones who need our help.

Most of the children (Jolie, Jonathan, James, Nathan, Jasmine, DY Po, DS Han, Sara Jane, Grace, Joseph, Mark, Ethan and Charlie) who went to surgery last month have returned safe and healed.

Show Hope Healing Home

The Show Hope team visited the building this month and was pleased with the progress. Work continues. After the Chapman’s personal tragedy, there have been discussions about naming this home in loving memory of Maria Sue Chapman but we have yet to come to a definite decision.

Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster Program

Jordan and JY Na were moved to foster care and Jeannie was brought back in-house as we have not been satisfied with the care she had been given. She is soon to be adopted to Australia. We currently have 23 children in the outreach program.

Alex was adopted and his place in the foster program was taken by Hugo.

NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)

These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings.

Jiaozuo

Alice, with cerebral palsy and high fever, was admitted.

FS Li was admitted and moved to Beijing for bowel surgery, and FB Hui with a congenital heart disease was also admitted.

Luoyang

This month we admitted Viktor who died before we could get surgery for him.

It was a great shock to us to hear that Sabrina died suddenly soon after she was sent to her orphanage for adoption.

Ron, James, Tiffany, Lara, Luna, and Mae died peacefully, loved and comforted.

Xin Yang

Bethany, 15 days old, was admitted severely ill and died several hours after admission.

Max was also admitted in a very vulnerable state but he is feeding reasonably well.

Sebastian was admitted and died soon after, peacefully and loved.

Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)

LC Wen and XJ Mei had bowel surgery this month. Mei will be returned to her orphanage after surgery in the hope that her dossier will be processed for adoption.

CW Jie was admitted after heart surgery and HJ Ni was admitted to prepare her for plastic surgery of her right cheek and neck.

Our Most Sincere Thanks To

  1. The Cantonese group in Beijing who have offered to support a nurse for a year.

  2. A large group of a local company from TEDA in Tianjin for their very generous donation of formula and finances.

Our Needs

  1. We would appreciate donations towards our cost of coal for next winter. It is cheaper to buy it now as opposed to later in the year. We bought 130 ton which the normal amount we use each winter for just over US $10,000.

  2. We are still in need of sponsorship for our Filipina nurses at US $1000 per month. Without them, our work cannot expand and the care of the children will suffer.

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
