News – June 2008

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This month has been really busy with more children receiving medical and surgical treatment. There were 4 more adoptions this month and a few more in the pipeline which is always very exciting. Please keep our staff and children in prayer. Many children are sick and some will not survive. Please lift up their suffering and the needs of all those who care for them.

Hope Healing Home, Beijing

Lucy remains in Hong Kong undergoing chemotherapy for cancer in her eyes. The news is good as the tumor in her remaining eye is responding to treatment and her sight could possibly be saved.

Emma in the US has undergone a second procedure for the defect on her face and she is doing well.

Jade is still in Singapore. Her heart operation was successful but there have been complications with her lungs.

DS Chuang has returned from Hong Kong after bowel surgery.

Hale and Abby Joy have had successful lip and palate surgery respectively.

Lola went to Hangzhou for heart surgery and DS Ji has had his first heart surgery and is doing well.

Jericho from our unit in Luoyang went to Hong Kong for cleft surgery. His previous repairs were not successful.

Y Mei and Gordan are home after cleft lip surgery at Anhui Children’s Hospital.

FS Li has been admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital for bowel surgery.

These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings.

Shane with a congenital heart condition was admitted.

Luoyang

Jessica, Carl and Phoebe were admitted this month in very poor condition.

Mark and Joseph have been fostered to local families after completion of all their surgeries, while awaiting adoption.

Luoie, a premature baby, was admitted and passed away within hours.

Xin Yang

Daniel and William passed away peacefully.

4-day-old Jasmine II was admitted in a very poor condition and passed away soon after.

Abby Joy, Jonathan and Grace who had their cleft clip and palates repaired have been returned to Xin Yang to be placed in a foster program there while awaiting adoption. This program is organized by Love Without Boundaries.

Our Most Sincere Thanks To

  1. We thank the 6th graders of the International School of Beijing for their support and interest in the care of baby James.

  2. We thank the Mackenzie Fund for covering the cost of 12 children who required cleft lip and palate surgery. We are grateful to all those who donate to the Mackenzie Fund for this purpose. 6-month-old Mackenzie Trask, granddaughter of a good friend, passed away in 2006. She was born with a cleft palate and her fund helps provide surgery for children with similar defects. If you wish to donate to this wonderful fund to help more children with cleft defects, please go to Shaohannah’s Hope Orphan Care website.

  3. We thank the various groups and organizations who have covered the cost of 6 of our nurses for at least one year.

Our Needs

We have had no response to our need for coal that we put out last month so I will mention it again this month. Contributing to this need is understandably not as popular as donating to a specific child but this is an essential need nonetheless, as the winters here are bitterly cold.

     1.  We would appreciate donations towards our cost of coal for next winter. It is cheaper to buy it now as opposed to later in the year. We bought 130 tons which the normal amount we use each winter for just over US $10,000.

We are also in need of finances for our medical fund for the children below who needed surgeries. These past 2 months we have had more than 25 children admitted to hospitals for various surgeries and illness. While many of the surgeries have been free of charge thanks to the generosity of the surgeons and other foundations, some have not been free and there are other “hidden” costs like transport and nanny stipends.

     2.  The following children need financial support for their surgeries. The prices vary greatly depending on where and what surgery was done, age of the child and seasonal changes in flight prices. Costs are averages.

Jade Jade (heart surgery): Airfare for child and escort Singapore return.
$1,200.
DS Han DS Han (neurosurgery): Travel and nanny care to Suzhou.
$650.
Charlie Charlie (heart surgery): Hospital fees, travel and nanny care in Hangzhou.
$7,000.
DS Ji DS Ji (heart surgery): Hospital fees, travel and nanny care in Hangzhou.
$7,000.
Jericho Jericho (cleft surgery): In Hong Kong, travel only for child and escort.
$1,300.
DS Chuang DS Chuang (bowel surgery): In Hong Kong, travel only for child and escort.
$700.
Lola Lola (heart surgery): Hospital fees, transport and nanny care in Hangzhou.
$7,000.

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
