News – July 2008
Dear Friends and Supporters, This newsletter is sent out earlier than usual as Rob, Katie and I are looking forward to a 2 week vacation at the end of this month. Dr Lim from Australia, a very competent, regular volunteer will hold the fort while I am away and all the nurses in all the units will be guided by him. This has been a relatively quiet month as far as the children are concerned. During the summer months, as usual, we have had many, many visitors and volunteers. We hope they see the needs of the children and take them into their hearts.
Hope Healing Home, BeijingAdam (FS Li) had successful bowel surgery. He will have his next surgery in about 3 months. Connie had her cleft palate repaired. Lola was returned to us after being admitted to in Hangzhou hospital for investigations and we are told that her heart condition was too complicated to be done in China. We are now attempting to send her out of the country to receive the care she needs. Patrick and Kyle from our unit in Luoyang had heart surgery in Zhengzhou. They have just returned to the unit and are doing well so far.
AdoptionsMicah has left us for adoption. We will miss his mischievous smile. He goes to a wonderful, loving family from the US.
New babiesWe have had no new admissions at time of writing.
Shaohannah’s Hope Healing HomeThe outside walls of the building have been painted and the internal fittings will begin early next month. Rob has been monitoring this regularly. Cribs and baby bouncers have been donated. Bedding is being prepared, and a couple of friends and I are quite close to finishing the 128 hand-made quilts for the babies that we will take into this Home.
Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster ProgramJennie was returned to us from her foster parents as they found it too difficult to discipline this active toddler.
NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings. JiaozuoPeter, with spina bifida, was admitted here his month. LuoyangAubrey with a severe liver condition, Wilma with Down’s syndrome, Carol with a cleft palate and Pierre Robin syndrome, and Danzen, 40 days old with Down’s syndrome, congenital heart disease, and failure to thrive were admitted. Phoebe passed away peacefully on July 8th. Mark (repaired cleft lip and palate) was returned to our unit from Foster Care because of severe exacerbation of his eczema. He is being treated appropriately. Jericho, who had surgery in Hong Kong, has been returned to this unit to await adoption. John, with cerebral palsy who is now 6 years old and doing very well, has been moved to Living Tree Foster Home, an organization that cares for children with cerebral palsy. John has improved in leaps and bounds from when he was admitted in September 2006, close to death. This is the best option for him and we know that he will be well cared for. Kyle and Patrick returned from heart surgery in Zhengzhou and they are doing well. Xin YangWilson, 3 months old with an anal deformity, Dorothy, 6 months old with brain damage and Timothy, 6 months old with hydrocephalus and severe brain damage, were admitted. Francis, only a few days old with a severe bowel abnormality, was admitted and passed away within a few hours.
Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)SA Quan returned to his orphanage after successful cleft lip surgery. His dossier is being prepared for adoption.
