News – March 2009
Dear Friends and Supporters,
2½ year old Lucy with cancer (retinoblastoma) in both eyes has been in Hong Kong for about a year, undergoing several treatments in an attempt to save her sight and her life. There was no choice but to remove her left eye (she now has a prosthesis) as the cancer had invaded it too much to be able to save it. Her right eye has a smaller cancerous growth and attempts have been made to treat this. She has had 4 rounds of chemotherapy, laser treatment and now she needs to have radiation of her whole right eye to try to save her sight. This is the only option, other than removing the eye, rendering her completely blind. There is a 53% success rate with this treatment and we feel that this is worth the attempt to preserve some sight. She is otherwise well and healthy, loves classical music, cheered loudly for the Chinese Olympic weightlifting team on TV and is such a joy to the family who is fostering her. This whole course of radiation treatment will cost about US $20,000.We would be very grateful for any donations towards this treatment. If you are willing/able to help Lucy please go to this link on the Donations page on our website and/or email joyce@hopefosterhome.com .
Hope Healing Home, BeijingJustin has been discharged from hospital but is waiting in Singapore till he is well enough to come home. Lola is still in the US. She has had heart surgery which went very well and she will have bowel surgery soon. Adam has returned from Hong Kong and we will continue treatment of his bowels. He may need surgery if conservative treatment does not work. Sean was admitted to the children’s hospital here in Beijing to have a repair of his hernia which had been causing him a few problems. He has since been adopted. HJ Tai had a 12-hour surgery for his expose bladder in Hong Kong. He is recovering nicely.
We have several children infected with chicken pox which has prevented 6 of them from being scheduled for cleft surgery early next month. We will have to look at other options when the infection has runs its course, In the mean time all non-essential movement of children in or out of the Home will be put on hold. We had 4 new admissions this month; in fact the chicken pox was brought in by one of our sweet new babies. DH Zhe came down with pneumonia soon after coming to us and was admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital. He is doing well now. We are grateful to the Mackenzie Fund for covering his hospital costs.
