News – April 2009

Dear Friends and Supporters,

With the recent economic crisis, there has been a marked reduction in donations to the work here in China. Up till today, we normally had around 3 months running cost in our accounts.

Unfortunately we find ourselves at the end of April with only ½ a month’s (US$ 30,000) running cost in the bank. As you all know we care for over 150 babies and have over 200 staff and have seen the work grow rapidly over the last 10 years. Our monthly running costs are now over US$60,000 per month. This does not include any medical costs incurred.

Please consider the need that we have for ongoing financial support to enable us to continue helping the least of the least in China. This is the first time ever, that we have had to make an appeal for running costs.

Hope Healing Home, Beijing

We are finally clear of chicken pox and children are once again being prepared to be moved for surgery. All our beds are full at the moment. The children have generally remained well this month.

Justin has had to be readmitted to hospital in Singapore as he has accumulations of fluid around his heart and his lungs. I have spoken with his surgeon and he is not unduly concerned and says that it just needs time to resolve. It is safer for him to remain in Singapore till all these complications are completely resolved.

Lola is still in the US having her bowel repaired. Her heart surgery was very successful and the team there offered to also repair her bowel for which we are very grateful. Many of our children come to us with more than one defect and often undergo multiple surgeries.

HJ Tai had a few complications in Hong Kong, namely heavy bleeding for which he had to receive a large transfusion and he also required a hernia repair. We are so grateful to Dr John Ngan and his COO team in Hong Kong for the excellent care this beautiful boy has received.

Maria’s Big House of Hope, Louyang

More pictures from MBHH as the artist works his magic throughout the building. Steven Curtis Chapman, whose charity sponsors this unit, has yet again won the Dove Award in the US for being the best Christian Artist of the year. We applaud him heartily. He deserves it.

We are in the process of equipping the Operating Room and are hoping to receive a team of medical professionals from COO in Hong Kong this summer who will try it out and advise us on what else we will need, to make it suitable for any surgeon to be confident in using in the future.

Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster Program

A new family has applied to join this program and we are waiting for their medical clearance before we accept them. All the kids in foster home are doing well.

We have moved Boaz Shawn and Rudy Andrew to foster care to await adoption.

NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)

These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings.

Jiaozuo

Larry, Lester, Yan Yan, Yvonne and Esther were admitted this month. Yvonne and Esther did not make it. We also lost Paul who had been with us for about 2 years. It was a blessed relief as this poor child had endured much suffering. His passing was peaceful.

Luoyang

Nothing to report this month.

Xin Yang

(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children’s Foundation Unit)

Andrew, Apryle, Zeny, Zane, Mia, John, Mae and Annie were admitted. Mia and Annie did not make it. Annie died on arrival in Zhengzhou during our desperate attempt to get urgent surgery for her. Mae will be moved for urgent surgery today and we pray the outcome will be different for her. David, Lily and Tina were well enough to be returned to the orphanage to make room for the new admissions.

Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)

GZ Wei will go to Shanghai for bowel surgery and HR Qun is being investigated for a large cystic mass in his abdomen. He will need surgery for this.

Please support Love Without Boundaries in their efforts to help the children in China.

These are 4 babies whose lives have been saved by the care they have received in our Special Care Units; the “unexpected blessings” we often talk about. Pleased help us to further our mission to heal them completely. They are beautiful survivors who deserve the best, who may one day bring a family a blessing they deserve.

Our Most Sincere Thanks

  1. To those who have covered the cost of Lucy’s treatment for radiation of the cancer in her right eye. The funds will be wired to Hong Kong for her treatment.

  2. We were pleased to have had 2 large groups stay with us from Lake Joondalup Baptist Church and Muller College in Australia. We hope the children have made a tangible effect on them.

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
