News – August 2009

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Lily
Lily

This month we lost one of our oldest palliative care children. Lily was nearly 6 years old and we have had her in our care for about 5 years. Many of you who have visited the unit in Jiaozuo or read our January 2006 newsletter asking for urgent medical supplies when she was severely scalded may remember her. Lily had severe cerebral palsy with frequent, daily seizures. We were able to control her seizures with medication and she was happy and content, although she was completely dependent on others to care for her. As disabled as she was, she touched many hearts and she was dearly loved. Lily taught us a lot about the value of life and death and the surrendering of all things to our Maker, trusting Him with things we cannot possibly understand. She died quickly and peacefully and went to be with the Father on August 12th, safe in His arms. We grieve for her but knowing that she was so loved and knowing where she is now, makes this all worthwhile. We are grateful to her nannies and nurses Perlita and Ayleen who were all by her side in her last few hours, making sure that she did not die alone and that her passing was painless and serene.

Hope Healing Home, Beijing

We have been very busy with so many children coming and going. Never a dull moment. As this organization grows and we are having to deal with more and more children on a very personal level, I am finding it harder and harder to keep track of the movements of all them but I am trying my very best. None have gone astray as yet.

FQ Chuan has had successful heart surgery. I referred to him as a “her” in the July newsletter which was a mistake. Perhaps I was thinking in Chinese where the spoken word “Ta” refers to either male or female. That’s my excuse anyway. He is doing well, He is on medication and needs a check-up in 3 months.

Knox and W Gang have returned from Shanghai after successful bowel surgery. They are healing very nicely and are finally ready to be put up for adoption after 3 separate surgeries.

Janessa has left for the US to have surgery on her tongue. We are grateful to the Bywater family for helping this little girl.

Mae from Maria’s Big House in Luoyang was sent to Shanghai for anal surgery and she has returned well.

Six-day-old Belle from our unit in XinYang had urgent surgery to create a colostomy as she was born without an anus. She, too, is doing well.

Adoptions

This month Anna Gizella, James, Joseph, Lily An Faith, Lucia and Ruth Marie and left us. They are all are ready and waiting for their forever families. We are particularly thrilled about Anna as we were not sure if a family could be found for her. We are grateful to the adoption agency Chinese Children Adoption International who successfully placed her (along with many of our other children) with a wonderful family. Jade has been adopted by a local family in Beijing and we are lucky to have the opportunity to see her often.

Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster Program

The 16 children in this foster program are doing well. Rose, who had worked with us for 2 years monitoring and reporting on this program as well as our sponsorship program and also taught pre-school, has left to go home to the Philippines. Mike Shook has taken over some of her duties.

NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)

These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings.

Luoyang

(Maria’s Big House of Hope)

Ashlynn, Carissa, Carolina, Fahlin, Jaelynn, Jay-ar, Jerusha, Joshua, Juliana, Lynlee, Mark, Pearl, Peter, Yves and Zane were admitted this month, and older children – Ginny, Jenny, Ross and Tommy – were returned to the orphanage, having been restored to health as much as was possible. Mae, who was originally from our Xinyang unit but remained in this unit for health reasons, had bowel surgery in Shanghai, and DX Wan (Ashlynn) was moved to Beijing in the hope that urgent heart surgery will be possible for her. Hudson, whom we were hoping to send to the US for heart surgery did not make it and he passed away peacefully. The connections that were made for us may one day help another child. Pearl, a preemie baby, also passed away. We had hoped that she would be OK, as she was doing quite well, but this was not to be. More new nannies are being trained and more babies are being admitted.

Jiaozuo

Emy was admitted. She has a severe liver condition and we are making her as comfortable as we can. Cheska, a normal baby, now very healthy, was returned to the SWI to make room for Helen, a child with hydrocephalus, who is too weak to feed. Lily passed away peacefully. Sheila was admitted and Leny was discharged to the orphanage to make room in our unit for Sheila.

Xinyang

(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children’s Foundation Unit)

Irish, a premature baby, passed away this month. LB Bao was transferred to Beijing for surgery, and Kent was admitted in a very poor condition and passed away peacefully a couple of days later. Belle was admitted and had urgent surgery.

Our Needs

  1. LB Bao

    DX Wan
    DX Wan
$2000 is needed for LB Bao’s bowel surgery.

  2. We are not sure exactly how much DX Wan’s heart surgery will cost, or whether she will survive, but so far it has cost us $3000 with an estimate from the hospital, of a total of about $10,000. We would be grateful for any contributions towards her medical costs despite the uncertain outcome. Most importantly, we covert your prayers for her survival. Although her chances could have been better if she had been sent to us earlier, we have worked very quickly to get her to a heart surgeon, hoping that she still has a reasonable chance of getting through this.

Our Most Sincere Thanks

  1. To Jeff and Angie B who covered the cost of the surgeries of Knox and W Gang, and also contributed to the cost of our coal. Love Without Boundaries covered the cost of GZ Wei’s surgery.

  2. To Show Hope’s Mackenzie Fund which covered the cost of FQ Chuan’s heart surgery.

  3. To Philip Morris for yet another large financial donation.

  4. To Rachel Sagar for covering the cost of Mae’s surgery.

  5. To John K for a financial gift to be used wherever the need is greatest.

  6. To Leader’s Quest and the gift of much needed medical supplies from Dr K Y Yu in Hong Kong.

Travelers Needed

We are in need of travelers from the US and UK to Beijing to help bring in much needed supplies for our children. None of these supplies are “restricted items” and do not have to be declared at customs. The items will be mailed to you within the country. New Hope Foundation staff will be at the airport to pick up the supplies in Beijing.

If you able to help or know of other travelers who are willing to help please contact the following:

a) From the US: Rebecca Dorris, Tennessee, Phone 615-371-5221
b) From the UK: Jennifer Drake, Surrey

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
