News – October 2009
Dear Friends and Supporters, This month Rob went to observe a fire drill that was organized at Maria’s Big House in Luoyang. We have never done this before but now that we have a huge 6-storey building that we are totally responsible for and many little lives to consider, we felt that it was necessary. We appreciate Nurse Mariah Bywater for initiating and organizing this important precaution. At the sound of the alarm, the nannies immediately put several babies in cribs, and then wheeled them to the designated stairwell furthest away from the “fire.” The nannies positioned themselves every few steps forming a human chain from floor to floor passing babies down the stairwell to the designated safe area outside. The target goal was to be completely evacuated within 30 minutes. Rob watched everything from the security monitors and timed the evacuation. We were all amazed that within 10 minutes everyone was out of the building. The staff was also taught how to use the fire extinguishers on a real fire set in the front yard. There were a few areas that need improvement, (Nurse Erma discovered a few babies still fast asleep on the 3rd floor and yelled out the window for help!!) but overall the entire staff did an amazing job. The team will continue to refine the procedure and perfect it in future drills. Obviously the critically ill babies were not subjected to the drill. We are happy to have Dr. Lim and his wife Nurse Choo from Australia with us again to help us out while Rob and I take a short break in Tennessee early next month. He will also cover Maria’s Big House while Dr Zhai visits the other units in Henan and takes a few days off. Dr Lim has volunteered with us many times and it is always a pleasure this have this servant-hearted couple back again.
Hope Healing Home, BeijingJosiah was admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital in respiratory distress for a few days and was discharged in a much better condition. He continues to do well. Holly returned from Hong Kong after investigations for growths on her left arm and chest wall. We are hoping for a quick adoption as surgery would be better done when she is older. Ian had his cleft lip repaired and he is healing well. Jaden, Naomi, FL Min, Grace and Ella were admitted to hospital for cleft lip repairs. It has been a long and difficult road getting these kids healthy enough to be accepted for surgery so we are hoping that all will go well.
Adoptions
Colton from the LWB Heartbridge Unit has left us to be adopted. We were so pleased to be able to meet his lovely new family. He had been with us for 2 years. We will miss him.
Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster ProgramThere have been no changes in the outreach program this month. All 15 children remain well.
NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings. Luoyang(Maria’s Big House of Hope) Ruffa Mae and Joshua passed away peacefully and loved to the end. 6 new babies were admitted all at once so our medical staff was pretty busy this month. One of the new admissions, Janelle, passed away peacefully in the early hours of the following morning.
JiaozuoHelen and Derek, two healthier babies were move back to the orphanage to accommodate two new premature babies, Peter and Leo. Peter aged 3 days and weighing only 1.5 kgs passed away the next day. Leo is 2 months old and weighs over 2.3 kgs. He may have a better chance of surviving. Xinyang(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children’s Foundation Unit) Stephanie passed away suddenly much to the distress of the nurses as her prognosis seemed good but they did everything they could. Clark was admitted in a very poor condition and passed away peacefully. 4-year-old Michael who suffers from haemophilia (a genetic condition where he lacks a clotting factor in his blood) has been admitted twice to our unit. We are now covering the cost of his on-going treatment (replacement of clotting Factor VIII) which he will need for the rest of his life. Hopefully this will lessen his bleeding episodes. Khloe was admitted in a serious condition but appears to be recovering. She will require heart surgery when she is more stable.
Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)Grace was admitted to hospital urgently but was discharged well after a few days. New baby Oliver was admitted to this unit for post-operative care after his heart surgery. He is doing well so far and is on many medications. Faith has returned from Beijing United Family Hospital and she has recovered from her chest infection. Jaquelin has been discharged to make room for sicker children. HY Guo a premature little boy weighing 1.6 kgs was brought in. He is alert and active, and has a good chance of surviving.
Please support Love Without Boundaries in their efforts to help the children in China.
