News – January 2010
Dear Friends and Supporters, A very Happy New year to you all. May this year be one full of blessings and joy. May you have the strength and the grace to bear any trials that may come your way. We have certainly had our share of trials this month. The younger and most vulnerable babies were hit with a virus that caused pneumonia and raged through the Home. The 5 most severely affected babies had to be admitted to hospital and the rest were treated at home. All nebulizers were in full use day and night and we were rapidly running out of medication. Some babies had to be isolated in which ever room we could find to put them in and several babies had to be suctioned repeatedly to help clear their airway. At one point we had 10 babies in hospital at the same time for various reasons and our staff and nannies were exhausted. This is probably one of the worst winters we have ever had.
L Xue (Khloe), who was transferred from our Xinyang unit to Beijing and then moved to Shanghai for urgent heart surgery, did not make it. We thank Love Without Boundaries for assisting with her admission to the hospital in Shanghai. Every one tried so hard but we were unable to save her. Her nanny is inconsolable. Though her life was short, she gave us much joy and many now grieve for her. On a more positive note, we had been asked many months ago by the Zhengzhou Social Welfare Institute to open a Special Care Unit there. This month Rob and our wonderful renovation team of supporters visited the site and plans are being drawn up to renovate a floor to be able to care for approximately 40-50 of their sickest babies. At the same time, the team visited the new Jiaozuo Social Welfare Institute where we have been asked to expand our current unit. We started our very first Special Care Unit in Jiaozuo 5 years ago with a small 12 bed unit and to date have cared for 179 dying infants, being able to save about 40% of them. This has run successfully since its inception and now we hope to triple the number of beds in the new building. We hope that work will begin just after Chinese New Year and hopefully be finished by the middle of the year. Please pray with us for these decisions we have made. Our intention is to always be in God’s will and to be guided by His hand in caring for his precious little ones.
Hope Healing Home, BeijingDZ Zhong (from Luoyang) and L Dan (from Xinyang) were sent to Shanghai for urgent neurosurgery. They are both recovering.
Three children were admitted for cleft surgery this month and are healing well.
ZT Ren was readmitted for the third time for an unresolved chest infection. She is finally over the worst but her lungs are still weak and treatment continues at Home. Josiah and DH De were also admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital in severe respiratory distress. They are home now and doing much better.
New AdmissionsDA Xue with clubbed feet was admitted.
Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster ProgramAll the children in this program seem to have survived the winter with hardly any problems. They are older, stronger children who are less susceptible to the infections passed from one to another in the main Home. We are hoping to move Julie to a family soon but she is too sick at the moment so this may have to wait till after she is better.
NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings. Luoyang(Maria’s Big House of Hope) Twelve new children were admitted this month and we lost Aimee, Pauline, Josef, Marianne, Mary, Elizabeth and Andorrie. DZ Zhong was sent to Shanghai for surgery. One of the nannies in this Unit recently lost her husband. The other staff members gathered around her and donated funds to help her cope financially with her loss. The organization doubled that amount. It is wonderful to see our staff caring for both widows as well as orphans. JiaozuoGabriel was admitted and Glenn was returned to the orphanage in good condition. Yolly passed away peacefully. Xinyang(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children’s Foundation Unit) Philip passed away and L Dan was move to Shanghai for surgery. Stanley, a premature baby was admitted in poor condition, only survived a few hours and died peacefully.
Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)Marshal, a premature baby, was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. He has other congenital defects that we will have to address when he is a little healthier. Julia and Andrew were admitted. Julia, a year old but weighing just over half her expected weight after having heart surgery, was too vulnerable to fight off the chest infection spreading rapidly through the Home and was admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital after 2 weeks of treatment at home. She is improving. When Andrew, aged 2 months, having had bowel surgery and weighing not much more than a newborn, arrived he was quickly isolated to protect him, in a guest apartment cared for by faithful volunteer Sylvia from England. To date, he is doing very well. Please support Love Without Boundaries in their efforts to help the children in China.
