News – March 2010
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Our deepest gratitude to all those who responded immediately to our request for funds, to keep this ministry running. Your generosity has put us in a much more comfortable position now to be able to carry on confidently. We now have the means to give tax receipts to our Australian donors. Please check this link on our website. For those of you in Australia who have been supporting us for years without the benefit of tax receipts, we are especially grateful and pleased that you will now be able to receive some benefits. We welcomed a medical team from Pennsylvania, which is planning on helping us with surgeries as well as much needed physical therapy training at Maria’s Big House of Hope (MBHOH) to help our children. 3 local women, one each from Jiaozuo, Xinyang and Luoyang were trained to do physical therapy in each of these units. We are very grateful to this team for their interest in helping and we will see how we can work together to benefit the kids. We opened the last of the 5 floors of children's accommodation in Maria's Big House this month. This floor is now fully equipped and staffed for 36 children requiring cleft surgery. As per normal we are being asked to take in more children then we have beds for. We will take as many as we can handle choosing the weakest ones first. The children come from many different Children's Welfare Institutes (CWI), mainly in Henan province and they are being fed and made healthy for cleft surgery which hopefully, will take place in our OR on the 5th floor in June. We would like to be able to receive children as early as possible to provide the care they need to keep them healthy before, during and after surgery to hasten their chances of adoption. We now have more options for good cleft surgery which we did not have several years ago. We will soon be moving our Jiaozuo Special Care Unit into the new Jiaozuo Children's Welfare Institute building. Renovations have begun and are moving along very quickly. We will increase our capacity from 12 to 36 beds in this CWI, targeting the children at highest risk. Since we started this small unit in 2005, we have cared for 182 children and while many have passed away peacefully, every survivor is a special blessing. Despite taking in the most vulnerable children with little chance of survival, about 35 have been healed and adopted and a set of premature triplets were reunited with their biological family. You have an opportunity to help us save more children by sponsoring rooms in our new unit. A floor plan is up on our website which shows the cost of “adopting” and naming specific rooms.
Hope Healing Home, BeijingEthan has returned from hospital in Hong Kong. He will need to go back to Hong Kong for more surgery in about a year's time. Sylvia H, a very special lady from the UK cared for him during his time there. Nathalie was admitted to Shanghai's Fudan Hospital for bowel surgery but they advise that she needs to be older for a good repair. A colostomy was done to prevent her from getting repeated bladder infections and making it easier for her nannies to keep her clean. We are hoping that she will be able to go to Hong Kong to be seen by the surgeons of the COO team as her defect is very complicated. Fahlin from MBHOH was investigated in Beijing and after discussions with our pediatric cardiac surgeon in Singapore he advises that due to several medical reasons, it would be more compassionate not to attempt a repair of her complicated heart condition as her prognosis is poor. She has been returned to MBHOH for comfort care. This is very hard for us. She is such a sweet baby but for now she is happy and comfortable. We hope to give her the best we can offer for the time that she will be with us. FD Hua was sent to the COO team in Hong Kong to have her bladder assessed by Dr John Ngan. Her bladder is fine but investigations showed that she needed urgent brain surgery with Dr CP Yu. We have so much to be grateful for, with this team of wonderful surgeons and doctors. Julia Grace and Cole went to Shanghai for bowel surgery. Julia Grace returned without surgery. This is going to be complicated and we are hoping to be able to send her to Hong Kong. New baby DT Xiao was admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital with respiratory problems and needs urgent heart surgery. DH Peng was admitted for urgent spinal surgery to a hospital in Beijing.
New AdmissionsWe admitted 6 new babies this month. DT Xiao with cleft lip and palate and a heart condition, Melody, Jana with cleft lips and palates, and DT Hu with clubbed feet and a beautiful smile. FZ Zhe with no anus and DX Zhi with a heart condition were also admitted.
AdoptionsGrace, Boaz Shawn and DJ Jun have left us to prepare to be picked by their new families. Connor, who was only recently admitted, has been adopted without having had his surgery. We were fortunate to meet Grace's new parents and are very happy to know that she will be with such a wonderful family.
Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster ProgramAll children are doing well. Boaz Shawn's family will be offered another child.
NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings. Luoyang(Maria’s Big House of Hope) This month we lost Jenica and Sophie. 30 new children were admitted and there are 117 babies in the unit at the moment. Lola has returned to China after surgery in the US and her dossier should now be processed for adoption by the CWI. JiaozuoGina and Ella were transferred to our Luoyang unit for different reasons, and FZ Zhe was transferred to Beijing. Nancy, only 8 days old, was admitted and transferred to Luoyang with suspected bowel obstruction but she was found to have multiple internal birth defects. She passed away peacefully. Chance, with severe brain damage, who has been with us for 5 years, passed away in his sleep. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to love and care for him for so long. Xinyang(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children’s Foundation Unit) Mae and Apryl were returned to this unit after successful surgery and we are hoping that they will be adopted very soon. Fortune, Megan, Princess, and Krishy were admitted in a very poor condition and Fortune, Megan, and Krishy did not make it.
Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)Levi, a premature baby who has thrived wonderfully, has returned to his SWI, and Henry who has had heart surgery has arrived for some extra care. Cole was sent to Shanghai for bowel surgery and Jackson was sent to Suzhou for heart surgery.
