News – May 2010

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This month we moved our Special Care Unit in Jiaozuo to the new SWI building. We are now on the 4th floor of the building and have been given enough space to triple the number of beds in this unit from 12 to 36, Tanner and Emily Richards worked hard to assemble all the new cribs and over the next few weeks more staff will be employed and trained and we will be able to accept more at-risk babies. New nurse Claire has arrived from the Philippines and will train with experienced nurse Erma to work in the unit.

In the 5 years that we cared for extremely vulnerable babies in our 12 bed unit in this SWI, a total of 187 babies received the very best care that we could provide; to date at least 22 of those babies have been healed and adopted and a set of premature triplets were returned to their biological family. Many other lives were saved even though they are unlikely to be adopted. We hope to continue to care for more of the least of the least, to Comfort always, Relieve often and Save sometimes.

The renovation team has now moved on to work on our new unit in Zhengzhou which we hope will be finished in a couple of months.

Hope Healing Home, Beijing

New nurse Sharon has arrived and will train in Beijing for a while with experienced nurse Mona.

Yesus and Cadence have returned from Suzhou after surgery to repair their spinal defects and are doing great. Brielle is having some complications with wound infection which the doctors are dealing with. DT Xiao (Ann Daisy) and Jack are home after successful heart surgery in Shanghai. They are doing well. Jude went to Hong Kong for surgery and is home now. ZY Si was admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital with pneumonia. He is home but his condition is still not very stable. HJ Tai made another trip to Hong Kong to see his surgeon Dr John Ngan who re-assessed his bladder after his recent surgery to make sure that all is going well with him and hopefully he can be taken off his medication. He required some surgery but he is recovering nicely. FZ Zhe was sent to Shanghai to have his bowel repaired. He was sent to us in December last year weighing only 3.4 kgs but he has doubled his weight. His surgery was difficult but he is recovering. Two babies, Naomi and DY Nan, went for cleft palate and lip surgery respectively.

Adoptions

No children have left our care for adoption this month but several have been matched and are just waiting for their special day.

Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster Program

All the children in this program are doing well and have had no major problems.

NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)

These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings.

Luoyang

(Maria’s Big House of Hope)

Heather and Roger were returned to the SWI. Maximillion with multiple birth defects died peacefully. Kate, Adam, and Anthony were admitted with various conditions.

Jiaozuo

It's been a very busy time for this unit with the move and our 2 nurses, Erma and Claire, are coping admirably. Rudy with an operable neurological defect was admitted. HS Ming with a serious eye condition was admitted and was immediately moved to Beijing for urgent eye surgery. Meritt was admitted in a very unstable condition with a heart problem and passed away peacefully the next day. Victor and Victoria with cerebral palsy were admitted and they should do well.

Xinyang

(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children’s Foundation Unit)

Jeffery a premature baby and May with heart disease were admitted. We will investigate to see if May's heart condition is operable. Leonard passed away peacefully.

Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)

Three new babies were admitted this month – Marisol, Emily, and Hannah all with correctable defects and needing extra care. Melanie has improved greatly and has been moved to foster care.

Our Needs

  1. Other than finances for surgeries for these children, most of our other needs have been amply met. 6 children located in our Beijing Home have not been sponsored for cleft surgery in the next few months. The cost per child will be US$350. Please let us know if you are willing to sponsor any of them and "before" and "after" pictures will be sent to the sponsors as soon as their surgery is done.

Our Most Sincere Thanks

  1. To Colleen DB, for faithfully coming to spend time with the babies as well as a large donation towards surgeries.
  2. To Show Hope's MacKenzie Fund, for covering the costs of 3 babies needing cleft surgeries.
  3. To Goldman Sacks for a generous financial gift.
  4. To Lost Mountain Baptist Church for their generous financial gift.
  5. To Beth R. of the Golden Phoenix Foundation for support of Ann Daisy's surgery.
  6. To the children of Glendower Prep School in the UK for raising funds for our babies during a "Book day".
  7. To the Australian Embassy for a second generous donation for the expansion of our unit in Jiaozuo.
  8. To Dennis and Gillian from Hong Kong who have been supporters as well as volunteers.

Travelers Needed

We are in need of travelers from the US and UK to Beijing to help bring in much needed supplies for our children. None of these supplies are “restricted items” and do not have to be declared at customs. The items will be mailed to you within the country. New Hope Foundation staff will be at the airport to pick up the supplies in Beijing.

If you able to help or know of other travelers who are willing to help please contact the following:

a) From the US: Rebecca Dorris, Tennessee, phone 615-371-5221
b) From the UK: Jennifer Drake, Surrey

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
