News – June 2010

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We apologize for sending this out so late. It’s been a very busy month. This month we welcomed our first surgical team from Geisinger Hospital in Danville, Pennsylvania to MBHOH in Luoyang to operate on several children with clefts. We are so grateful to Dr Joe DeSantis and his wonderful team which was put together by Dr Erica McElroy. We hope they will be back again in the future.

Two very special little girls in Tennessee deserve a mention this month. Zara Dorris turned 9 and, in lieu of gifts for herself, she requested gifts for the babies of New Hope Foundation. Below is a picture of her with a suitcase filled with gifts. She sent a note to all her friends with this picture saying “Thank you for helping the precious sick orphans in China. Go to www.hopefosterhome.com to see pictures of some babies I played with when we visited China in March 2010.” Mallory Johnson celebrated her 3rd birthday earlier this year and has provided about 30 sleepers for babies at New Hope. She is pictured below with her Mom Jill.

Hope Healing Home, Beijing

Rudy and DC En went to Suzhou for neurosurgery and we are grateful to MedArt/COO the Suzhou team for accepting these babies. Rudy’s prognosis is not good and some difficult decisions will have to be made. We pray for guidance. DC En’s condition was much less dire and we hope she will be fine. Jackson was sent urgently to Hong Kong to Dr John Ngan and his team for bowel and bladder problems. He is home now and doing well. Naomi, DY Nan, DY Yang, John David and Victoria had their palates and lips repaired in Beijing with Smile Train and they are dong fine. HS Ming’s left eye was removed and we await the pathology report to see what further treatment he needs, ZY Si, and DX Jun were admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital with pneumonia. This is ZY Si’s second admission to hospital and still needs oxygen and intensive care. He is being fed by tube so that he does not aspirate but it still seems so difficult to get his lungs clear. May from our unit in Xinyang had successful heart surgery in Shanghai. She is doing well and looking fat and pink. She will need more surgery later.

Adoptions

Adam was moved back to his orphanage to await his parents but he will be in the care of our staff on our new floor till his parents arrive. We visited him yesterday and he is very settled, happy and generous with his hugs and kisses. David was also moved back to his orphanage to await his parents.

Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster Program

Kaleb with clubbed feet needs more treatment as he is not walking as he should for his age so we will investigate further and have him fitted with splints.

NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)

These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings.

Luoyang

(Maria’s Big House of Hope)

Leanne, Cassie, Kate, Jenna, and Clark died peacefully. Max, Dori, Jane, Caleigh Evan, and Owen were admitted with various conditions. 11 children received cleft surgery and are doing very well.

Jiaozuo

Alex, Carter, John, Junery, Jonvil, and twins Clint and Clark were admitted, and Alice was retuned. Adam and Joely Hope were moved to this unit from which they came for continued medical care. Adam awaits adoption. With the expansion of this unit we are able to move children out of Beijing so that their beds can be used for more medically needy children.

Xinyang

(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children’s Foundation Unit)

Ray passed away peacefully from a severe inherited illness. Gabriel and Dwight were admitted, and 4-month-old May was sent to Shanghai for heart surgery and everything went well.

Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)

Evan was admitted after heart surgery. He is very thin and fragile but he is quite a fighter. Erin was returned to her orphanage to make from for others. It was hard to say goodbye to Erin who was dearly loved by our staff. Her poor nanny made many excuses to try to have her stay but it’s hard when there are so many fragile babies who need the beds so urgently. We hope that she will be put with a good foster family and hope for an eventual adoption. Marisol was sent to Shanghai for heart surgery. Katie was admitted for correction of her clubbed feet.

Our Needs

  1. We help with the cost of coal for next winter. It’s always cheaper to buy in now rather than waiting till winter. The cost is about US $11,000.
  2. May’s heart surgery in Shanghai, about US$7000.
  3. DX Jun’s recent admission for pneumonia. He is still in hospital but we expect the cost to be about US$10,000.
These are all big bills but any amounts towards these expenses will be very gratefully received.

Our Most Sincere Thanks

  1. To the Governor General of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC for her gifts to the children and a very special gift for Rob and myself.
  2. To Andre, Chaleen, Kyla, and Tatum Botha for a gift of 5000 rmb collected at their ‘farewell gathering’ when they left China.
  3. To the Steven’s family, Show Hope’s Mackenzie Fund, and Jing Shen and her friends who together responded promptly to our need posted last month to cover the costs of 11 children in our Beijing Home who will receive cleft surgeries over these coming months.
  4. To the students and teachers of Harrow School of Beijing for visiting us and bringing a generous financial gift.

Travelers Needed

We are in need of travelers from the US and UK to Beijing to help bring in much needed supplies for our children. None of these supplies are “restricted items” and do not have to be declared at customs. The items will be mailed to you within the country. New Hope Foundation staff will be at the airport to pick up the supplies in Beijing.

If you able to help or know of other travelers who are willing to help please contact the following:

a) From the US: Rebecca Dorris, Tennessee, phone 615-371-5221
b) From the UK: Jennifer Drake, Surrey

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
