News – July 2010
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Some exciting personal news: our son Adam, a media lawyer formally with Walt Disney in Tokyo, won the coveted title of Australia’s MasterChef 2010. He beat 8000 contestants, and after several grueling months landed the title. He is now ready to make a career change. We are so proud of him and we thank all those who sent their congratulations from many parts of the world. He has become quite a celebrity back in Australia with 5.74 million people watching the finale, and he is a bit overwhelmed by all the attention.
Back to the work in China... Our Zhengzhou unit is in the process of having the cribs and equipment moved in, and our Henan Director Linda is beginning to train local staff. Two nurses have already been assigned to this unit and are ready to move in. Our good friends and partners in the service of the orphans of China, Steven Curtis Chapman and partner Mary Beth Chapman and their two little ones were with us again this summer and we were presented with Mary Beth’s book, Choosing to See. We all were able to take a few days’ vacation on Hainan Island together and spend some quality time away from the stresses of work. Because of and not in spite of each of our sufferings, together we have been chosen to ease the sufferings of many children. For this, we will always be grateful.
Hope Healing Home, BeijingRudy who had surgery on a defect at the base of his brain did not survive though we all did our very best. We are grateful to Dr CP Yu of MedArt/COO for his personal attention to this baby. We also lost ZY Si who had difficult times with pneumonia requiring a lot of intensive care. We are extremely disappointed to lose a baby whose only defect seemed to be a cleft lip and palate but perhaps there were other things going on with him that we were yet to discover. Children with clefts are known to have other congenital midline defects and again we all tried our very best but it was not to be. HS Ming, whose left eye was removed, was reported to have a ciliary glioneuroma, a rare tumor but apparently it is not cancerous and no further treatment is needed. Melody and Melissa had their lips repaired and should be out of hospital next week.
New AdmissionsThere were no new admissions to Beijing this month. Two beds are reserved for children who will arrive soon. All other beds are fully occupied. AdoptionsKaleb and Patrick have been healed and have left us to be adopted this month. They have both been in the Outreach Foster Care Program and now have their forever families.
Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster ProgramOther than Kaleb and Patrick leaving for adoption, all the other kids are well and just waiting for their families.
NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings. Luoyang(Maria’s Big House of Hope) Tyler and Micah died peacefully, loved and cared for. Nine other children were admitted this month bringing the total number cared for in this unit to 346. 127 babies are currently resident in this unit. After some issues beyond our control, only five out of possible 14 babies – Billy, Soren, Eli, Thomas, and Grant – received cleft surgery with Operation Smile in Hangzhou this month. The team of nannies and their babies were led by Nurse Mariah Bywater and everything went well for our babies. The well-trained nannies were with their babies to comfort and care for them and received praise for their dedication to their children. JiaozuoGwynne, Mike, and Alyssa were admitted. Mike only survived a very short time and passed away peacefully with staff who cared. Rudy did not make it. We have cared for 200 babies in this unit and with our recent expansion from our original 12-bed unit, 24 children are currently occupying beds here. We have 12 more empty beds. Xinyang(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children’s Foundation Unit) Dwight a premature baby and Ryan passed away peacefully. Louie a baby with many congenital deformities and one-day-old Derek with a cleft lip and palate were admitted. 118 babies have so far been cared for here and the beds are all full with 18 babies.
Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)Marisol is having a difficult time in Shanghai after her heart surgery. Please keep this sweet girl in your thoughts. Emilio is done with his post-op treatment and was healthy enough to be returned to his province to make room for others. Audra and Lan were admitted for post-bowel surgery care. Both are malnourished and need some tender loving care.
