News – August 2010

Dear Friends and Supporters,

After months of renovations we have begun taking in babies into our new Special Care Unit in Zheng Zhou. This is our 5th unit in China bringing our total bed capacity to 320. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the nannies, even though they didn’t have their uniforms ready at the time these pictures were taken, have been trained and are ready to work. 19 extremely vulnerable infants were admitted over the last 2 weeks and put in the arms of their nannies. Nurses Ednalyn and Sharon head up this unit and Dr. Lim and his wife Nurse Choo from Australia are available to assist with the new babies. We are blessed to have yet another opportunity to help more babies and thank our Board members who encouraged us, Simon who has renovated most of our units in Henan, the Australian Embassy who gave us a grant to cover part of the renovations and Show Hope who has offered financial help to run the unit for a year. We thank them all for enabling us to love and care for these needy babies.

Hope Healing Home, Beijing

Jay was admitted to Beijing United Family Hospital (BUFH) to have emergency surgery for what we thought was an incarcerated hernia but after a brief scare of the possibility of a cancerous growth, it was found to be a benign infection and he has recovered. Jay also has a bleeding tendency and was admitted again to the ICU after an episode of uncontrolled bleeding requiring an infusion of very expensive clotting factor. We are grateful to the staff at BUFH for their quick attention and to all Jay’s supporters in Hong Kong for their financial support and prayers for his recovery. We are also thankful for Drs Ngan and Chan in Hong Kong for being available to help if it was needed. It’s amazing to see how many people really care for this little one. DY Hao went for heart surgery in Shanghai, and Melissa for bowel surgery also in Shanghai. DX Jun and Jana are in hospital having their cleft lips repaired. Melody, Elizabeth, DY Yang, Amelia, and DY Chen had their lips repaired and they look beautiful.

Adoptions

Rose, Lucy, and Jason from our Special Care Unit in Xinyang have been adopted recently. We are told that they have gone to Spain. We also received an email from a parent in Australia who adopted Precious our very first baby admitted to the Xinyang Special Care Unit in 2007. She is thriving in her new home and we are so happy to hear this. Brooks (Divson) and Ella (Molly) who have had their lips and palates repaired have been returned to Xinyang for preparation of adoption. Kudos to our staff in Xinyang who have done an incredible job saving these babies who once had no hope of surviving.

Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster Program

The foster mother of Charmion and Julie has returned the girls as she has some serious health issues. She has been one of the very best foster mums and we are so sorry that she is going through this difficult time. We hope that she gets well soon. Charmion and Kathy have been moved to foster care in their province. Grace who is awaiting adoption has been placed in foster care in Shunyi.

NHF Special Care Units, Jiaozuo, Luoyang and Xin Yang, Henan Province (75 beds)

These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings.

Luoyang

(Maria’s Big House of Hope)

Maya, Donald, Dori, Nash, Peyton, and Levi died peacefully, loved and cared for. Ruth, Charlotte, Malachi, Gavin, Noble, Tamina, and Dastan were admitted this month. We feel that Noble has a heart condition that is operable so we are trying to get him into surgery ASAP. God willing this is one more little one that we could possibly save.

Jiaozuo

Gwynne, Mike, Cresta, Lexie, and Alyssa were admitted. Mike, Lexie, and Cresta only survived a very short time and passed away peacefully. Rudy did not make it even after the neurosurgeons tried so hard. The surgery was successful but Rudy could not be weaned of the ventilator to breathe on his own.

Xinyang

(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children Foundation Care Center)

Derek passed away peacefully. Merideth was admitted but only survived 10 days. Izzy and Callie were admitted in a very poor condition. Angelina, Eric, and Piolo were also admitted.

Zheng Zhou

19 sick babies were admitted over a period of a few days and we were unable to save Jaydon, Yosef, Ximen, or Miya. Maximo, only 12 days old on admission, needs emergency surgery and was moved urgently to Shanghai.

Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)

Faith has been moved to foster care in her province and we will miss her terribly. She is the cutest little thing. Marshall is finally healthy enough and has had hernia surgery. We are so happy to report that Marisol is finally starting to improve after her heart surgery. We have been praying so hard for her. Andrew and Hank went to Shanghai for bowel surgery.

Our Needs

  1. As most of the children we take in require corrective surgery, we are always in need of funds to cover the costs. Often these surgeries are life-saving. If anyone feels called to contribute even in a small way to any of these surgeries, please contact us. You gift could go a long way in saving a precious life.
  2. We are in need of baby clothes for children under 12 months. Gently used clothes would be most welcome.

Our Most Sincere Thanks

  1. To the Tudor Foundation for their continued financial support.
  2. To the Levin family for sharing their mother/grandmother’s 80th birthday with our children by having a party here in our Beijing Home.
  3. To Gillian, Dennis, Susanna, Cynthia, Vena, and Jasie for generous donations to cover the medical costs of Jay’s recent hospitalization.
  4. To Leaders’ Quest for their continued financial support.

Travelers Needed

We are in need of travelers from the US and UK to Beijing to help bring in much needed supplies for our children. None of these supplies are “restricted items” and do not have to be declared at customs. The items will be mailed to you within the country. New Hope Foundation staff will be at the airport to pick up the supplies in Beijing.

If you able to help or know of other travelers who are willing to help please contact the following:

a) From the US: Rebecca Dorris, Tennessee, phone 615-371-5221
b) From the UK: Jennifer Drake, Surrey

With our deepest gratitude,

Joyce and Robin Hill
