News – January 2012

Dear Friends and Supporters,

In Loving Memory of Luke

Harith
Luke

On Boxing Day last month Luke passed away very suddenly. He was a very special little boy who had been with us since birth and was on the brink of adoption. He was 6 years old and was happily opening his Christmas presents just the day before. His foster parents, Mike and Eliza, are stunned and inconsolable. We are not certain of his cause of death but there were signs that he had bled into his lungs. We miss his cheerful spirit. He was greatly loved. Our deepest condolences to his prospective adoptive parents whom I am sure were looking forward so much to holding their new son. Words can't describe how shocked we all are by his sudden death. It's hard to move on after a time such as this and talk about other things, but move on we must for the sakes of the others who need us. "Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted".

Here is a brief update on what your help has enabled us to do to help the abandoned children of China during 2011:

  • 302 children were admitted into our care.
  • 58 children (that we know of) have been adopted into loving homes. There may be more but the CWIs are not obliged to inform us as to where the children go, after they have been recalled.
  • 156 children were admitted to hospitals for either medical or surgical treatment. Many more were treated by our own medical staff for minor illness and 11 emergency surgeries were carried out in our OR.
  • 78 children were loved and comforted as they passed away peacefully

Recently, I was asked to present a rough count of the number of children currently in our care who require surgery of some kind and the estimated cost of their surgeries. The figures for the major surgeries came to:

  • 42 heart cases costing about 2,100,000 rmb (US$333,000)
  • 80 cleft lip and palate cases costing about 184,000 rmb (US$29,000)
  • 13 anorectal/bowel defects: costing about 260,000 rmb ( US$ 41,000)
  • 13 genital defects including, ambiguous genitalia/hernias/undescended testes/hydroceles etc costing about 260,000 rmb (US $41,000)
  • 4 biliary atresia needing liver transplants: costs unknown

These figures are not a request for funds, but are just to give you all a rough picture of where your donations go to, when you so generously give to help us heal these children.

Harith, who was doing so well after his gastrostomy, came down with pneumonia again and was admitted to hospital. He is now recovered, home with us and is ready to travel to Los Angeles for surgery. DH Tong was in hospital for a whole month and her heart surgery was delayed for several different reasons. She was sent home but is back in hospital for heart surgery today together with GY Kang. DE Ling's heart surgery was successful. DE Xiang was in Hangzhou for successful heart surgery. Jimmy was admitted to hospital with dehydration after severe bouts of diarrhea and vomiting which affected many of the children. He is home now and fully recovered. DH Di and DZ Zhao had their lips repaired and they are looking good. Chase has had his final bowel surgery and is doing very well. Marina is still in Hong Kong with the MedArt team having her bladder repaired. She is doing great. HD Wei has been admitted for eye surgery.

Love Without Boundaries Shunyi Outreach Foster Program

All the children are doing well.

NHF Special Care Centers Jiaozuo, Luoyang, Xin Yang, and Zhengzhou, Henan Province (75 beds)

These units provide humane and loving, hospice care for infants and young children with severe congenital defects who are unlikely to survive under normal circumstances. Those who survive are unexpected blessings.

Luoyang

(Maria’s Big House of Hope)

Briar, Zenna, Jahzara, and Elisa were sent to the local hospital. Jatrich, Clayton, Dereck, and Sherard were also sent to the hospital for respiratory distress and have since returned better. Timothy and Dawson returned from the hospital recovered from their respiratory illnesses. Jeanine and Adelyn died in the hospital. Jay was discharged back to the orphanage out of our care. Abraham and Finnegan died peacefully, finally at rest. Jacey and Yonah were admitted for emergent surgeries. Julio, Hubert, Eliezer, Brianna, Elisa, Julia, Liandrew, and Joy were admitted. Ynez was admitted and promptly sent to the hospital for surgery.

Jiaozuo

(Show Hope Special Care Center)

There were no changes this month.

Xinyang

(Alexandra Yeo and Open Arms Children Foundation Care Center)

Yannah was admitted but soon died in her sleep. Warren, Carmela, and Winona were admitted.

Zhengzhou

(Show Hope Special Care Center)

Neron, Leathan, Yerik, Cailan, Quennel, and Taivon were admitted. Leander was admitted with a difficult medical history, but he is thriving so far in the Special Care Unit. Ponce and Moirah died peacefully. Kirk, Xelex, Xavier, Conner, Daphne, and Khalil were discharged back to the orphanage. One baby developed chicken pox.

Love Without Boundaries Heartbridge Rehabilitation Unit (18 beds)

We are sad to have lost Gabe who died in hospital from pneumonia. He was so tiny he didn't really have the strength to fight the usual winter infections. Julia was returned to her province to meet her adoptive parents. She is such a sweet girl and it was a pleasure to have had her with us. Zachary was admitted to hospital with bronchopneumonia but he is now home and well. Brody had a problem with his colostomy so he was admitted to hospital to have it revised but this seems to be difficult. Max had his final bowel surgery and should soon be adopted.

Our Needs

For those who responded to the need last month for children's vaccinations please email me again (joyce@hopefosterhome.com) if you are still interested. I have missed many of your emails during my travel for medical treatment this month.

Our Most Sincere Thanks

  1. Rob and I extend our deepest gratitude to all of you who helped us financially, prayed and hoped for us, provided medical care, transport, accommodation and helped us in every possible way to allow me to have spinal surgery in Los Angeles this month. Our lives have touched in many wonderful ways. My recovery will be slower than I expected but we believe this season of suffering will now come to an end.

  2. Tennessee church presentationOur special thanks to 10-year-old Zara Dorris who made a presentation at her church in Tennessee to talk about our orphaned babies (see photo). She and her family have been involved in this ministry for many years and we have been blessed by this little girl, over and over again.
