Saving Joey

Thursday 27 October 2006

Joey Dang Jian Yu
Joey Dang Jian Yu

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We have been keeping you updated about Joey. The latest is that we have had a second opinion from a top neuropathologist from Johns Hopkins Hospital who confirms the diagnosis and that his cancer will not respond to treatment. The plan now is for Joey to remain in Beijing till mid November when Lyn Gould, our resident nurse, returns to China to be stationed in our Palliative Care Unit in Luoyang orphanage. Joey comes from this orphanage and he will be put in her capable hands. We know that he will receive the best of care. He is currently not in any pain or discomfort. We are very grateful to all of you have prayed for him, cared for him and provided funds. We are grateful for his surgeons, doctors, pathologists, nurses and volunteers who have given their skills and precious time to help this baby. There are too many of you to name and some of you we have never met personally, but we are still indebted to you for your compassion throughout this ordeal. Please continue to keep him in your prayers.

The funds that have been donated for Joey will be used for his continued care and any left over will be go help other New Hope Foundation children with urgent needs. For those of you who have given generously, if you have any concerns about the use of the extra funds, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Thursday 12 October 2006

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I just received an email today from a highly recommended neuropathologist from Johns Hopkins Hospital in the US, who is very willing look at the slides of Joey’s tumor.

God, in His grace, provided for us abundantly yet again and we have had offers from more than 10 neuropathologists from 4-5 different countries around the world this past week. We have chosen this specialist who was referred to us by St Jude Children’s Research in the US (and many others) as the pathologist that they send their most difficult cases to.

Thank you all very much for your offers of help and recommendations. I am praying that the news will be good but if not, we are here to love and care for Joey till the end.

God bless

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As you know, Joey’s operation in Hong Kong was a success and we have informed you that all his projected financial needs have been met.

Unfortunately the pathology report on his tumor is not good. He has an extremely rare tumor that, I am told, will not respond to chemotherapy. The surgeons estimate that he will not survive more than one year. We are bringing him home to Beijing but we would like a second opinion on the pathology report.

Does anyone out there know of a neuropathologist who would be willing to review his slides and confirm this diagnosis?

If so, please contact me on joyce@hopefosterhome.com.

Please keep this little boy in your prayers.

Thursday 28 September 2006:

All the funds needed for Joey have now been fully covered. Any extra that come in after today, will be put in our medical fund for other children needing surgery in the near future.

We are at a loss for words to describe our gratitude at the generosity and love that you have demonstrated towards Joey, a child that most of you have not even met or held in your arms.

Thank you all so very much.

We have an awesome God.

Monday 25 September 2006:

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I know that many of you are probably constantly bombarded with requests for funds for one project or another but please read Joey’s story and see if you feel you can be involved in our attempt to save him.

Joey Dang Jian Yu is 10 months old. He is from Luoyang SWI and was abandoned because he was born with his bladder outside of his body. Joey came to our home when he was only a month old and we arranged for him to have surgery on his bladder in Hong Kong by a Urologist whose specialty is Bladder exstrophy. His surgery was successful despite some minor infection and he was returned to us last month. Since then he has not been well. He returned to Hong Kong’s Matilda International Hospital3 days ago (Friday, September 22) and after thorough investigations they have found that he has a malignant brain tumour. His neurosurgeon tells me that if they operate now, and he goes through 6 courses of chemotherapy he has an 80% chance of a cure. The tumour is localized and has not spread. St Mary’s Hospital has a team all ready including pediatric oncologists waiting to accept Joey. They have generously given us very basic rates but the cost of his surgery and 6 courses of chemotherapy will come to about US$60,000. One generous donor has already donated US$20,000. We cannot wait, so we will walk in faith. Joey is being transferred to St Mary’s Hospital this morning (Monday, September 25) and his surgery will go ahead this Wednesday (September 28). If you would be like to be involved, you will find bank account details on our Donations page.

Please email us if you send in a donation so that we can designate these funds to Joey.

May God’s perfect will be done in Joey’s life.

Joyce Hill
