Medical Volunteers to the Special Care Units, Henan Province
October 2007
Medically trained volunteers are usually posted to one of our Special Care Units outside of Beijing. We expect that your medical training will enable you to cope well with the difficult circumstances under which we care for at-risk infants.
Our vision and purpose is to ease the suffering of children despite the inevitable outcome. Our hope will always be “to comfort always, to relieve often and to save sometimes”.
We will only accept volunteers willing to serve for more than 1 month.
Medical registration
It is not necessary to be officially registered here to be a short-term volunteer. There will be no medical procedural work done in the Units other than keeping the babies warm, fed and comfortable and all cases that we feel need serious medical attention will be referred to a hospital.
What is a Special Care Unit?
These units take in at-risk infants who, without special care, may not survive.
| • |
The infants are sent to us by the orphanage doctors who feel that the children would benefit from our care. |
| |
|
| • |
These units are located within the Government orphanage facilities. |
| |
|
| • |
The work is very low-tech and some very basic medical equipment is available e.g. incubators, sterilizer, nebulizers, oxygen, patient monitor etc. |
| |
|
| • |
No intravenous drug treatment is used in our units. |
| |
|
| • |
Drug use is very basic. |
| |
|
| • |
We will accept advice and treatment as suggested by the orphanage doctors even though you may not agree with it. |
| |
|
| • |
We do not allow volunteers to bring their young children into these units. |
| |
|
| • |
As with most medical units providing intensive care for infectious and/or terminally children, these are “Restricted Access Units”. This means that visitors (individuals or teams) will be strictly limited and permission will need to be obtained from New Hope Foundation management staff or the Orphanage staff before entering a Unit. |
| |
|
| • |
Taking photos of the children will not be permitted. |
| |
|
| • |
Any child in your care who takes a turn for the worst must be reported immediately by phone to your superior who will give you advice on how to handle the situation. Such a child must never be left unattended. |
| |
|
| • |
The work is hard and emotionally draining. Be prepared. |
